do you believe in the long tail?

Filed under: are you smiling? - Administrator @ 6:08 pm

I got out of bed early, worked out, did some work, and now I am enjoying a protein shake.  Life is good.  As for the theme song of the day, I have chosen North American Scum by LCD Soundsystem.  Maybe it’s the films I have been watching.. or maybe it’s the election propaganda … but I am definitely feeling this track today.  For those of you who don’t feel like rockin’ out — I added Amos Lee. He’s really mellow.

Amos (delete me too) Lee

Anyway, about the long tail…

So this guy called Chris Anderson wrote an article in Wired in 2005 about "Long Tail" economics.  From what I recall, the article was about DVD’s and film –basically, the revenue stream for even horrible niche films wasn’t based on box office sales, but long term (in this case) rental revenue.  He’s writing a book and started a blog, and the saying is up there with ‘wisdom of crowds,’ ‘black swan,’ and ‘hedgehog.’  If you have never heard of any of those phrases, then your life is a lot more exciting than mine.

Here’s a link to the original article, as well as Chris’ blog

Anyway, my point is more that with the inevitable death of IP, where’s the long tail?  And if there is no long tail, who is going to pay to produce content?  You say advertising… but I am not so sure.  I don’t have an answer yet — but hearing people call google the world’s largest advertising firm gives me pause.

And for those of you who REALLY need a P.A. or at least and admin, there’s Sandy the virtual assistant.  I’m still have privacy issues w/ something like this…but you may not. Check her out — she’s free.

good music and sunshine

Filed under: are you smiling? - Administrator @ 4:05 pm

Today is one of those sunny happy days.  I have been listening to mellow music, drinking green tea, and enjoying my morning.  So today’s theme song reflects it: Good Music by The Roots, from the Organamix album.  It reminds me of that Brand New Heavies project back in the day. very fun.  The album is perfect for a day like today.

Ever wonder how a really, really, really smart guy thinks?  Then check out Buffett’s letters to shareholders. This link contains decades of brilliance…well, i suppose he’s kinda lame if you’re not into capitalism — but you have got to respect his skillz.

And I have to tell you about the VBS.TV series called Hi Shredability.  I can’t stop watching it.  It’s interviews with surfers, filmmakers, artists, and others … there’s even a scene where they are filming at Blackies (11 degrees and snowing really makes you miss home). Anyway, VBS is put together by the Vice Magazine guys — so if you dig Vice, then you might really dig VBS.  By the way, the series is way mellow, w/ none of the shock value jackass nonsense that you might be expecting from Vice — think longboards, not volcom.  I can’t speak for the rest of it… but I am sure that you’ll get some old school Big Brother skate style too (if you know what that means).

Today’s theme song of the day is Cupid, written by Johnny Nash and covered by Amy Winehouse… i know what you are thinking .. she’s played out and has been overexposed… I agree — but the song is cool, and fits the day. check it out — you might be pleasantly surprised –reggae always makes me happy.

Finally…. i get to sleep

Filed under: are you smiling? - Administrator @ 6:53 pm

I’m quite tired, haven’t slept well in days, and have finally finished our case competition.

 I get to sleep.

So today’s theme song is in keeping with my state at this time…

It’s Back to Life by Soul II Soul.

And you’ve gotta think that this is cool: Talk about arbitrage…this guy has it down.  He’s listed every available 0% credit card offer, even ones that give you points for borrowing, the highest interest rate savings accounts (probably could get more from CD’s), and how to make money on the deltas - he made $450 w/o any risk.
