i watched the most amazing thing this morning. Nick and I were surfing the point at low tide…it was a little after six am. The lefts were coming through a bit too fast, so we went to the second peak — it’s our favorite anyway because you can go either right or left. The current was crazy fast — if you weren’t paddling against it, it didn’t take a minute to move north 500 yards. Anyway, Nick got caught in the current and as I looked north, I saw him dropping in on a solid left (call it third peak). But the best part was the two dolphins who lept out the back of that wave as he was dropping in…they were easily 6 to 8 feet out of the water. They swam towards me, lept out of the water again; and for a minute, I was afraid that one might land on me. They played in the surf for the rest of the session — it was fun to watch. Now, we see dolphins all the time…but today was different. It was cool.
I’ll post the song of the day in a bit — I need to eat something.

i’ve been running everyday for 2 weeks…my body is really digging it. Still slammed, so I will post later (I know that I said that yesterday…but I had a serious meeting that took a lot of time/mindshare).

lots to do…but i want to post the theme song of the day. It’s not new, and it’s not necessarily a happy song — but I really like it. "You Could Be Happy," by Snow Patrol. I think it’s the music box sound that I like best…
I will make one quick point…I was just reading about GMAC’s effort to insure drivers based on data from their OnStar units. I love the idea. In fact, it’s the exact idea that I told the McKinsey partner during my second round interviews over a year ago. He had asked me how I would solve a problem that he was having in monetizing gps systems — and never quite said it, but I knew that they were trying to get additional value from OnStar — maybe i just told him what his team had already figured out…but by the way his eyes lit up and he scribbled frantically on his notepad, I’m tempted to think otherwise. I’ll just put that in the "another one of my ideas" file. 
I suppose that I’d really be bummed had I not been given the offer. As it stands, I just feel cool.

A lot of my friends and colleagues will remember me talking about fuel pricing hedges for independent commercial trucking and taxi drivers. The idea was to create hedging strategies that enable the individuals to take advantage of the benefits that most corporations have (e.g. Southwest Airlines). I’ve been talking about it for years, but didn’t see it come into the market until recently when Chrysler started providing fixed fuel costs for their new vehicles. Now mygallons.com has launched. It’s a fuel hedge for everyday people. Looks like Steven Verona was ahead of me. It’s exactly what I was talking about, with a larger potential client base. My biggest concern was fund maintenance and the fees for hedges (this is what has enabled Southwest to hedge more than its competitiors) — but it appears that the upfront fees should account for most of that risk. Moreover, I suppose that they can build transaction fees into the pricing, as well as set pricing on the fly (as futures market prices move). I really like the idea of a membership model (a la costco). They make the bulk on the fees and charge a flat 15% margin — the same can be applied here…so it should work out great! Just wish that I had pushed this idea further…I also wish I could have locked my cost in at $2.50 for a gallon of premium — we’re paying nearly $5.00 out her in so cal.
